All the weight loss program options that are out these days can be overwhelming.  I mean you can find all types ranging from quick fixes that require only a few days to expensive programs that last for months depending on how much weight you’re trying to lose.  Some work, some don’t.  But whichever you choose there are just some things you can’t get away from when losing AND MAINTAINING your weight loss….healthy habits, healthy eating, and a great workout regimen.  I don’t care what the program promises you…if it doesn’t incorporate these then your weight loss, if any, will likely be temporary.  So what weight loss program is out there that is very affordable, involves various workouts that “keep your muscles guessing” to increase your chance of weight loss, and DOESN’T INVOLVE STARVING YOURSELF?  21 Day Fix Extreme baby!  It’s the new Beachbody program from Autumn Calabrese…great workouts, EXCELLENT meal plan, and gives you 21 days to form new, healthy habits that you can realistically maintain for life.
I’ve never been very big in size.  But since graduating from college some years ago I have struggled with staying out of the 140s…I typically fluctuate somewhere in the mid- to high-140s. But in an effort to get to or at least very close to the “normal” size for my height (somewhere in the low to mid-130s) I’ve tried a number of weight loss plans over the years.  There was one that was a 7-day plan, which left me starving and feeling light-headed at times the first 2-3 days of it.  Then there was the plan when I stopped eating meat and worked out about 2-3 days a week but had cheat days on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (kind of defeats the purpose).  I had also tried a few Beachbody programs such as Hip Hop Abs and a couple of the Insanity cardio workouts but just couldn’t stay consistent with them nor found the right eating plan for the weight loss I wanted to achieve.  But it wasn’t until I started the 21 Day Fix Extreme program when I started to see some real results and form new habits that, if I stuck with them, I knew would help me keep the weight off.
The Discovery of Something That Finally Seemed to Work…21 Day Fix Extreme!
Even with running 2-3 times a week (generally 20-30 minutes each time) and going to the gym 3-4 times a week (eventually increasing to 5) I was still stuck in the mid to upper-140s…VERY FRUSTRATING!! On top of that, I wasn’t even a bad eater (well sometimes I was). I just couldn’t figure out what else I needed to do. So I decided to explore my options by checking out four different programs. The first was a very intense, highly reputable boot camp program that offered either an 8 or 16 week option but costs several hundred dollars. The second was another similar boot camp program that was a little cheaper and also known for getting people into shape. Then I checked with the personal training program at the gym where I have a membership, which only included four sessions and possibly a nutrition plan only depending on the trainer I got. The final option I considered was Beachbody. I had already been familiar with their Shaun T. and P90X programs but for some reason hadn’t heard of the 21 Day Fix program. I had posted on social media how I was becoming frustrated with my weight loss efforts and getting discouraged. One of my sorority sisters saw my post and responded to me with an inbox about a Facebook group she was in that did monthly fitness challenges using Beachbody programs. The group, Fit Fyne & Fabulous, was created by a small group of female Beachbody coaches who are not only passionate about their own fitness but also about helping others who are struggling with reaching their fitness goals. The coach from the group who reached out to me (her name is Rhonda and she’s awesome!) told me all about their mission and listened to my fitness goals. She knew I was passionate about my health and strongly recommended
that I try 21 Day Fix Extreme. I have to admit that initially I was VERY NERVOUS about trying the program, which hadn’t come out yet so I couldn’t find any reviews on it. But I tried it anyway and so glad I did!  First of all, there are two different 21 Day Fix programs…the original version then the EXTREME version. The program consists of 7 different workouts that are 30 minutes each. Working all parts of your body but stepping up the intensity from the original version, the 21 Day Fix Extreme program includes upper body, lower body, cardio, and even Pilates and Yoga (I never realized how challenging Pilates and Yoga can be until I did this program…but I felt so good afterwards). The program also includes color-coded containers to help with portions during meals. For example, a red container is for proteins while a yellow container is for carbs. However much food you can fit into the container is how much you can eat as long as you don’t exceed your recommended daily calorie goal (the program’s booklet provides instructions on calculating this). The lists of allowed foods during the plan is great…I was
still able to enjoy foods such as crab legs, pizza, and even ice cream (homemade ice cream made with bananas, almond milk, and Shakeology)! The only difference I know of between the original and Extreme version meal plans is that you are not supposed to have any wine during the Extreme program. I must admit that eventually I slipped up a couple of times and had 6-8 oz of dry, red wine 🙁 The particular package I ordered, the Challenge Pack, also came with a few additional workouts such as 10-minute hardcore and another very challenging cardio workout, Fix Challenge. All of the workouts with the exception of Pilates and Yoga are fairly intense in my opinion, which is why it is recommended that you either complete the original 21 Day Fix program first or at least have some other consistent workout regimen you had been following prior to doing the Extreme program. I had already been running and going to the gym consistently so I felt that the Extreme version would give me the results I was looking for.
I lost about 6 pounds in the first week…I’m sure mostly water weight. Since the group did monthly challenges I actually worked out for a week beyond the official 21 day cutoff. During the last week I stepped up my workouts and did two-a-days 3-4 times that week, which mainly consisted of me doing extra cardio such as running or working out on the elliptical. I ended up losing a little
over 12 pounds and some inches.  I think with the 21 Day Fix Extreme program I lost between 8-10 pounds plus inches so the extra workouts that last week helped me lose a little more. Maybe I didn’t lose as much without the extra workouts because of the couple of times I cheated with wine or maybe I just needed to push myself a little harder. Needless to say, I’m VERY happy with my results…my body fat went from just under 32% to 23%…wow!!
About 2 weeks out of the program I’m still feeling great and doing some of the program’s workouts.  I have been getting SO many compliments from people on my weight loss. Most of my clothes fit much better…some are even too big! I’m even thinking about doing another round of the program, which I’m finding that many people do. And I still use the containers for some of my meals and snacks to continue with portioning correctly. Quite honestly, I don’t even desire to eat as much at a single meal as compared to before I started the 21 Day Fix Extreme program. The program has really helped me form healthy habits that I’m not struggling to stick with unlike some other programs. This program stands out not only because of the intense but rewarding and variety of workouts it offers but also because of the AWESOME meal plan that helps with portioning while still allowing you to enjoy your favorite foods…this was my favorite part of the program. So if you’re ready to get really serious about achieving your weight loss goals and up for a challenge that you are sure to find rewarding in the end, I highly recommend either the 21 Day Fix or 21 Day Fix Extreme program. It’s only 21 days so why not give it a shot. And remember, it takes approximately 21 days to form a new habit…so you might as well make it a healthy one 🙂
